Brendan Rodgers charged by Scottish FA as Celtic boss faces possible ban for Rangers clash.
Celtic manager summoned to SFA disciplinary hearing following remarks made in the aftermath of defeat to Hearts
The Scottish FA has charged Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers for his post-match comments towards officials during a 2-0 defeat by Hearts on Sunday.
The Northern Irishman accused referee Don Robertson and video assistant John Beaton, in particular, of “really poor officiating” after two important decisions went against his team following VAR replays.
Rodgers called Beaton’s VAR intervention on Yang Hyun-jun’s red card “incredible” after the winger was first booked for catching Hearts defender Alex Cochrane with a high boot. He labelled the penalty award against his team as “worse” after Tomoki Iwata was severely penalized for handball in the box following a VAR review.
After mentioning Beaton by name, Rodgers stated: “I try to respect decisions and give the benefit of the doubt, but when I see that level of incompetence, which is the only word I can use, it makes me concerned about the game.”
Rodgers is now facing a possible touchline ban as a result of those remarks, having been presented with an SFA Notice of Complaint. He will be summoned to a disciplinary hearing at Hampden on March 28. The Celtic boss might face suspension for the Old Firm match against Rangers on April 7 at Ibrox.
The charge sheet states that the 51-year-old violated Disciplinary Rule 72, which prohibits any club official or player from making comments that “indicate bias or incompetence” on the part of a match official.
