The Celtic manager was called to an SFA disciplinary hearing because of remarks he made after the team’s loss to Hearts.
The Scottish FA has charged Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers for remarks he made to match officials after his team’s 2-0 loss to Hearts on Sunday.
After two crucial decisions went against him after VAR reviews, the Northern Irishman blasted referee Don Robertson and video assistant John Beaton in particular of “really poor officiating.”
After Yang Hyun-jun was first booked for catching Hearts defender Alex Cochrane with a high boot, Rodgers called Beaton’s VAR intervention on the red card issued to the player “incredible.” After a VAR review resulted in a heavy penalty against Tomoki Iwata for handball in the box, he called the penalty against his team “worse.”
“I try to respect decisions and give the benefit of the doubt, but when I see that level of incompetence—that’s the only word I can think of—that makes me worry for the game,” Rodgers said, mentioning Beaton by name.
After receiving an SFA Notice of Complaint for his comments, Rodgers may now be subject to a touchline ban. He will also be called to a disciplinary hearing at Hampden on March 28. This increases the possibility that the Celtic boss will be barred from the dugout for the April 7 Old Firm match at Ibrox versus Rangers.
According to the charging sheet, the 51-year-old violated Disciplinary Rule 72, which prohibits players or club officials from saying anything that could be seen as “indicate bias or incompetence” on the part of a match official.
