MLS side Charlotte FC lure Celtic star in with £10m outlay to secure star forward transfer.
According to reports, Celtic winger Liel Abada will sign with MLS team Charlotte FC after the East Coast team paid £10 million to acquire his talents.
Thus far in his career, Abada has proven to be a very valuable attacker. In all, the attacker has contributed 22 assists and 29 goals in 112 appearances with Celtic.
In the Scottish Premiership in 2021–2022, he scored 10 goals and provided seven assists. The next season, he scored 10 goals and contributed five assists in the same division.
Following their defeat by Rangers in the 2020–21 season, Celtic won the title in each of those seasons thanks to Abada’s valuable results in front of goal.
But this season, the winger’s contribution has decreased even though he was a key player in two straight championship victories.
That was because of a knee ailment that kept him out of action for a good portion of the campaign. Even though he recovered from that injury in December, he hasn’t played in any of the team’s last four league games.
And the Hoops might end up second to Rangers for the first time since before Abada signed if he isn’t able to help them score the goals.
In fact, they now behind their opponents from Glasgow by two points. However, Abada is not likely to be overly concerned about Celtic’s future at this point.
Abada and Charlotte FC reach a £10 million contract.
At the same time, he appears to be traveling to America to meet up with Dean Smith, the former manager of Aston Villa.
In fact, Sky Sports reports that MLS team Charlotte FC has reached an agreement to sign Abada for £10 million.
Considering that he reportedly paid £3.5 million to sign with Celtic in 2021, they are profiting handsomely from him.
However, players like as the one Abada will sign with are increasingly prevalent for MLS teams.
Abada’s MLS fees are among the top five.
In fact, five players have transferred for more than their transfer cost to top-tier American teams.
At the top of the list is Thiago Almada, whose move to Atlanta in 2022 will set him back about £12.4 million.
Even still, Abada isn’t the most costly acquisition an MLS team has made in transfer window. Hugo Cuypers, who moved to Chicago Fire for £10.25 million, gets that moniker.
However, Abada easily breaks the record to become Charlotte’s new highest transfer fee.
Yes, that was held by Enzo Copetti before he moved for £5.1 million in 2023 from Racing Club.
They will be hoping that the forward’s goal-scoring abilities are fully utilized for them once the move is completed following his scheduled medical this week. The forward’s cost is nearly twice as much as Charlotte’s previous record.
