Everton are firmly entrenched in a relegation battle again, despite having received success in their recent appeal.
After weeks of flirting with 18th place, they soared five points clear of the bottom three after regaining four points from their first ten-point deduction.
Their form is still poor, though, and it needs to improve quickly.
Thankfully, they are fortunate to have a lot of bad teams in the Premier League this year, one of which is managed by Chris Wilder.
What Chris Wilder said about Everton
The Sheffield United manager, who returned to his old team earlier this season, was candid in his evaluation of the points deduction disaster as he spoke on live Monday Night Football.
It is hardly surprising that he is contemptuous of the situation, given his status as a true old-school manager who has been outspoken in his criticism of VAR and strict in his demands for respect.
“Your job as a professional football player is to go right to the end,” he would assert last night. As a manager, it is my responsibility to see that my staff completes the task at hand. We shall so continue till the last whistle and the last day, no matter what. We haven’t been good enough this season, so we need to give our fans something to cheer about.
“I haven’t really given Everton and Forest much thought, especially an hour and a half before facing a team as good and prestigious as Arsenal.”
After that, his team suffered a humiliating 6-0 loss, with five of those goals occurring in the first half. In just their last four home games across all competitions, the Blades have allowed 21 goals. And we believed that Goodison Park’s recent performance was poor.
Everton cannot rest despite a successful appeal
Even though many viewed Everton’s four-point comeback as a huge accomplishment, it does not totally protect them from the loss.
Luton Town has already demonstrated their propensity for a strong run of play and a comeback, and Nottingham Forest and Brentford have also occasionally produced outstanding results this season.
In the meantime, the Toffees have not won in the Premier League in 2024, and their supporters have not witnessed a victory since their team’s 2-0 league triumph against Burnley in December.
It has been a disastrous run, and part of the reason for that is not only the players’ wastefulness but also Sean Dyche’s incapacity to make adjustments to games that sorely need a personnel change.
They have been strangled by their stubbornness throughout the season, but he cannot afford to become complacent right now in particular. After all, a run-in with their relegation opponents is all it takes for things to seem dire once more. Things can change so rapidly.
Things will probably change once they secure that first victory, hopefully at Goodison Park. However, until then, morale will stay extremely low, and considering their recent performance at Old Trafford, a trip to Manchester United is unlikely to improve matters.
