“That should be buried” – McCann makes striker complaint as one that got away saves Gers blushes
Liam Kelly, a former Auburnhowie, had his say in the dugout, but the manager of the Gers was correct to point out that we had more than enough opportunities to win if we had played as well as we did against Hearts the previous week. Fabio Silva, who scored a goal at Ibrox last week, had a chance to tie the score before halftime. Former Rangers winger Neil McCann believes a more successful attacker would have taken that opportunity.
Fabio Silva given Rangers analysis from Neil McCann
It was the transfer window dispute for January. Does Rangers require a second striker, preferably one who scores goals more frequently? With 27 goals under his belt, it’s understandable why Lawrence Shankland was the most frequently mentioned name; Scott Allan felt it was a squandered chance. If he keeps scoring goals against Celtic, though, it might be preferable for him to stay at Hearts!
“I just feel at times, Silva doesn’t get across the front post,” McCann said on BBC Sportscene, analyzing the many opportunities that Rangers squandered, including the one in which Fabio Silva shoots straight at Kelly with the goal open.”A natural goal scorer, these are in the back of the net and Rangers don’t succumb to that defeat that they’ve suffered today,” the player said, “having umpteen chances that should be buried.”
To Silva’s defense, on a gloomy afternoon, he was arguably the best player for the Rangers and the most likely to create an opportunity. The 21-year-old seems to be more comfortable playing off the left side of the attack, and because Abdallah Sima, Oscar Cortes, and Rabbi Matondo are all sidelined due to injury, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him continue in the upcoming games. Still, McCann is correct.
The 31-year-old is Philippe Clement’s finest finisher, and I would have placed my mortgage on him to take all of the opportunities that his fellow forwards failed to take. Shankland saw that a catastrophe was avoided, but we might not have need a favor in the first place if he had worn the renowned Light Blue jersey this weekend rather than the maroon of hearts.
