Sunderland decision on youngster isn’t looking good

Sunderland loaned Jewison Bennette to Aris in January, but the Costa Rican has hardly featured in the Greek Super League

Sunderland allowed winger Jewison Bennette to leave the club on loan in January, but the Black Cats’ hierarchy may already have regrets over the move.

The Costa Rican winger temporarily relocated to Aris Thessaloniki of the Greek Super League, although Bennette has found it difficult to establish himself and hasn’t played much thus far.

Although the club was correct to loan the youngster out in January, they would have like to see the 19-year-old play often to aid in his development rather than seeing him play infrequently and struggle to find a game.

The Central American attacker is not benefiting from this, and although Bennette is still new in Greece, it doesn’t seem like this decision has benefited or will benefit anyone.

In retrospect, before agreeing to send Aris there on loan for the remainder of the season, Sunderland might have made sure the player would play regularly.

Jewison Bennette’s time at Aris so far has been a let-down

Bennette undoubtedly needed a loan move, and on the surface, the decision to go to Aris appeared like a wise one.

The winger, who was highly regarded when he arrived on Wearside last season, had only played 79 minutes of football for the Black Cats this season and was not in the starting lineup.

Even though the Greek Super League isn’t one of the major European leagues, Bennette would have benefited much more from playing on a weekly basis there than from playing under-21 football at Sunderland or from the bench. Additionally, since Aris also has two other Costa Rican players in Alvaro Zamora and Ronald Matarrita, there was a good chance that Bennette could make a permanent move.

He has only played in two games as of this writing, both of which he started, but he was substituted off at halftime in each of them, so he hasn’t exactly had the expected effect in Greece.

For Sunderland, this may be even more of a cause for concern than the player not being selected at all; after two opportunities, he was substituted off at halftime, indicating that he may not meet the necessary calibre.

Bennette’s future in Greece appears to be gloomy as he has not even made the club’s matchday roster since being substituted off against Atromitos on February 17.

Even if dribbling is one of his apparent skills, the winger’s stats don’t seem good: according to Fotmob, he has only accomplished one successful dribble in his time in Greece, with a success percentage of just 25%.

Jewison Bennette’s Aris Greek Super League Stats – 2023-24

Duel success 25%

In his ninety minutes of football, he has only managed one shot and has only won three duels with a success rate of 25%. He has also completed 15 passes with a success rate of 75%.

Bennette’s transfer to Greece may have been more carefully investigated by Sunderland, but in the end, a player cannot expect to play if he is not doing well.

If the Sunderland loanee isn’t up to par with the league, Aris, who are playing for European football, can’t afford to select him. Aris is now fifth in the Greek Super League table.

Sunderland should have loaned Jewison Bennette elsewhere

Although it’s simple to say in retrospect, Sunderland ought to have leased Jewison Bennette to another team.

This season, the player has had difficulty breaking into Sunderland’s matchday squad most of the time, thus it was foolish of them to think he would be a regular in the Greek Super League.

When it comes to a loan move for Bennette, they need to have looked closer to home because the player is obviously not good enough yet for a club of Aris’ calibre.

It’s safe to say that the Costa Rican international would have benefited more from a transfer to League One than from missing out on the Greece matchday squad.

In brief moments, he has demonstrated his brilliance as a player, and League One clubs would have been delighted to sign him. Bennette’s career at Sunderland would have ultimately benefited from playing in England.

Nobody has profited from the move to Greece, and Sunderland will undoubtedly regret lending him to Aris.
