Pierre Ekwah has praised Sunderland interim coach Mike Dodds after back-to-back defeats.
After Michael Beale was fired two weeks ago, Mike Dodds was elevated to take over as head coach till the end of the current campaign.
The 37-year-old, who defeated West Brom and Leeds United during his stint as interim manager back in December, has been the one bright spot of the current campaign.
He has, however, had a far more difficult start this time around, losing to Norwich and Swansea City to make it four straight losses.
Sunderland faces Southampton and Leicester City this week, two very difficult games, and they are currently nine points outside of the playoff spots.
Even if under Dodds things haven’t exactly gone as planned, Pierre Ekwah has commended the coach and stated that “you are starting to see” the impact he is having on the team.
It’s been good, the Frenchman said in an interview with Sunderland Echo. He and I have been working together for about a year and a half, and he has always been excellent. You are beginning to witness him implementing his ideas at this point.
We’re not going to win, which is unfortunate, but you can see what he’s trying to accomplish, and as a team, we trust in him, and he believes in us, which is positive. We undoubtedly have a solid foundation on which to act.
Have Sunderland improved under Mike Dodds?
Although I think Mike Dodds is a great player and that his victories over Leeds United and West Brom were somewhat of a miracle, I don’t think we can really play it too safe this time around.
I could be alone in this, but I haven’t noticed any improvements since Michael Beale left. So far, Dodds has only made dubious choices. The previous week, he started five at the back and Callum Styles on the flank.
Given that he was successful against the bigger clubs the last time, it will be intriguing to see how the Black Cats fare against Leicester. However, if we lose a few more games this week, it will be quite concerning going forward.
The club probably wasn’t prepared for Dodds’ short-term absence to go badly, but we also don’t want to freak out and replace him for the remainder of the campaign.
It is difficult to see why, if these players all genuinely adore Dodds, they continue to act as though they don’t care. Do all of them intend to depart during the summer?
Of course, the current coach cannot be held responsible for all that is wrong, but it is troubling that he is unable to lift their spirits.
