Rangers: Sky Sports pundit goes against the grain with Dan Casey verdict in loss v Motherwell.
Kenny Miller believes the umpires got it right by not sending out Dan Casey in Rangers’ defeat to Motherwell at Ibrox.
Casey received no punishment for his lunging challenge on Ross McCausland before to scoring a late winner in Saturday’s (2 March) match.
Miller disagreed with former FIFA officials Bobby Madley and Dermot Gallagher, who believed the challenge deserved to be dismissed.
“I think the referee got it right,” he remarked on Sky Sports News [4 March, 1:43pm]. Dan Casey arrived early, and it was more of a clearance than a tackle.
“Obviously in this day and age, with the pace, intensity, and follow-through – and I’ve never been a supporter of the follow-through red card – in this example, I don’t believe Casey followed-through with a high boot and made any significant contact with McCausland.
“It was more of his body on the follow-through. I understand the aggressive character of it, but it wasn’t a red card or a foul.”
Rangers suffer a shock Ibrox defeat against Motherwell
Miller is the first analyst or former official to question Casey’s decision to stay on the field.
It was a weekend of contentious calls from officials, with Brendan Rodgers lashing out following Celtic’s loss to Hearts.
Celtic’s defeat means that things stay as they were at the summit, even if Gers fans are still disappointed with what transpired at Ibrox.
Casey’s challenge was irresponsible and should have resulted in an immediate red card for McCausland.
It’s surprising that referee Alan Muir and VAR official Euan Anderson didn’t agree.
If it’s any consolation, the Rangers have two huge games coming up this week to help them get over their Motherwell setback.
Let’s hope that a disputed call from the authorities does not decide either of those matchups.
