Sharp disclosure made by the Sunderland manager regarding Callum Styles prior to the Leicester match at home

Mike Dawson has acknowledged that he still needs to experiment with the adaptable Hungarian and that he is unsure of where Callum Styles plays best.

Styles moved from Barnsley to Sunderland in January, but he had to miss his first few weeks as a Black Cat player due to an appendix surgery he had just before arriving to the North-East.

Even though the 23-year-old had played in an advanced midfield role for the majority of his time at Barnsley, former manager Michael Beale made hints when he signed that he was considering using him as a left fielder.

Styles usually lines up on the left flank or in central midfield for Hungary, but he started his debut match in Sunderland colours as a left wing-back and ended up on the right side of midfield as the Black Cats fell to Norwich City over the weekend.

When Sunderland hosts Leicester City tomorrow, it’s unclear where—or even if—he will play, as Dodds said he’s still trying to figure out how to get the most out of the January addition.

The acting manager admitted, “I’ll be honest with you, we’re still getting to know Callum.” “He played a variety of positions at Barnsley and has incredibly good skill. He was a left-back, left wing-back, and an eight. He played primarily down the left side when on loan at Millwall.

Because of some of Norwich’s ball-possession threats, we used him off the right, but obviously in extremely narrow situations both in and out of possession. We also thought he could pick up some dangerous positions when we had the ball. The enjoyable aspect of the match was that, although not frequently enough, we did indeed do that occasionally. I did notice some pockets of what we worked on.

Fortunately or unfortunately for him, Callum is a very versatile player, and as a head coach, those players are invaluable. He is a terrific youngster who asks lots of questions and can play a variety of positions on the pitch.

To be perfectly honest, I have no idea what his ideal position is at this moment. I am aware of his past performances, therefore we must figure out how to effectively use him in this situation.
