Leicester City: Enzo Maresca makes stark revelation ahead of Sunderland

Following the severity of Ricardo Pereira’s injury, Enzo Maresca made a bold allegation about Leicester City’s midfield alternatives.

The Foxes suffered another setback at the weekend, losing their third league game in a row to Queens Park Rangers, after losing to fellow promotion contenders Leeds United the week before.

The fact that they were unable to take any points from their home match against QPR was bad enough – the London-based side is barely out of the relegation zone – but their captain, Pereira, suffered an injury in a training session prior to the game.

The severity of the damage has been discovered, and it is not good news.

Ricardo Pereira is injured.

The Portuguese international injured his hamstring while preparing for the encounter on Saturday. He is scheduled to miss a month.”Ricardo is injured, and he will be out until after the international break,”said Maresca.

Pereira had a reputation for being prone to injury, but he had managed to avoid the sidelines for the majority of the season. This season, the 30-year-old has appeared in 31 out of 34 league matches for Leicester.

The shock of his injury was exacerbated by another difficulty faced by still another midfield alternative. Dennis Praet had to leave after 16 minutes on Saturday after limping off with his hamstring. At this point, the severity of his injury remains uncertain.

Enzo Maresca joins Leicester in the midst of their midfield injury problems.

In the heart of the park, the Foxes have only three options: Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Harry Winks, and Yunus Akgun. Maresca’s system necessitates three central midfielders, leaving Leicester without any natural replacements.

The Spanish manager confessed he may have to come out of retirement for the game against Sunderland on Tuesday. Maresca won the UEFA Cup while playing as a midfielder for Sevilla. He told the Leicester Mercury that: “Probably on Tuesday [against Sunderland] I can play half an hour, 45 minutes, because at the moment we have just Harry, Kiernan, and Yunus.”

Leicester’s injuries should be troubling for supporters.

At this stage of the season, you want to move into the higher gears with a steady team and seem untouchable, which can’t be stated for this present Leicester side. Given that Pereira is a natural full-back, his deployment as a central midfielder should have been cause for concern, but now that he is out, they are extremely limited in their choices.

Ipswich Town is just on their heels, and if Huddersfield Town did not put up a fight, Leeds United would be right there as well.

The injury bug has attacked Maresca’s team in the most unexpected way. Their roster has a lot of depth throughout, but if two or three crucial players in the same position, such as Wilfried Ndidi and Praet, are injured, there isn’t much else you can do.

Championship Table (As it stands March 4th)
Team P GD Pts
1 Leicester City 35 40 78
2 Ipswich Town 35 25 75
3 Leeds United 35 37 73
4 Southampton 35 24 70
5 West Brom 35 18 59
6 Hull City 35 7 56
7 Norwich City 35 9 55
8 Preston North End 35 -5 53

Leicester’s injuries have not been evenly distributed around the squad, but they must find a method to overcome them, even if it means limping at the end.
