Lawrence Shankland has detailed a furious stand-off with Joe Hart after Celtic’s Premiership loss to Hearts.
The striker was flagged offside for one goal but scored the winner on a tense afternoon at Tynecastle, which the home side won 2-0. Jorge Grant put the Jamaicans ahead, but not before goalie Hart taunted him.
According to television footage, the shot stopper accused the Scotland striker of being a’s******g’ for refusing to take it. Shankland had the last laugh after the contest and revealed what transpired when the pair exchanged words.
When asked what Hart told him, the Hearts captain smiled and answered, “I don’t think I could say it.” He was definitely joking. He was clearly expecting me to accept the punishment and had probably been studying me all week.
“He hit one against Aberdeen [in January] and scored after missing three in a row, so there’s no reason why he shouldn’t hit them when he’s on the pitch. It’s something I’m extremely comfortable with, and there was no disagreement about it. I was quite pleased for him to score.
“When Jorge hit it, I believe it put him off guard, which may be a positive thing. Previously, I’d obviously hit the last two, but Jorge wasn’t on the field.
I believe that surprised him [Hart]. He would have decided where he was going if I had taken the penalty and studied it a little bit, but Jorge stepped up calmly and scored. It is simply part of the game. I probably would have said the same thing. A few of the outfielders had inquired as to whether I had also bottled it. If I had been in their shoes, I would have asked the same questions.
“That’s football.” That is what it all comes down to. There is typically some banter amongst the players on the field, but I was confident in Jorge to score.”
