James Tarkowski explains what is ‘most important’ to Everton dressing room as second points charge ‘looms’

Everton’s Premier League points deduction was reduced from 10 to six following an appeal

James Tarkowski feels Everton have received some much-needed clarification following the reduction of their point deduction for financial rule violations in the Premier League following an appeal.

Everton announced on Monday that an appeal board had determined that the points deduction of 10 points that the independent Premier League Commission had imposed in November would be lowered to six points effective immediately.

In November 2023, a three-person independent commission concluded that the Blues had violated the Premier League’s profit and sustainability standards, earning the team a 10-point deduction. The allegations were brought against the club in 2022 after they reported losses exceeding £105 million over a three-year span.

After West Ham United defeated them 3-1 on Saturday, Tarkowski responded to the decision by saying, “I think clarity is the most important thing for us.”

“Now that it has been resolved, let’s focus on the football and attempt to win some games. That was supposed to begin today, but it didn’t. We are now moving on to the next one.

Even with the disheartening loss on Saturday afternoon at Goodison Park, Everton still has a five-point lead above the relegation zone. But after being charged in January for potential violations in their 2022–2023 finances along with Nottingham Forest, the club now has to wait through another stressful period.

The matter needs to be heard next month, but if there is an appeal, the decision might not be made until the last round of games in May. Tarkowski, though, feels that his side cannot claim ignorance as a justification.

“You could easily use the second charge that looms over again as an excuse as uncertainty, but we can’t use that,” he stated.

“We have been playing well, and we have played well so many times; therefore, the players are to blame because the manager sets us up and we create problems for teams; play solid defence, because you will eventually be punished if you don’t give them a chance to rest.”
