‘I’d select him’: Kieran Trippier says Gareth Southgate should call up his Newcastle teammate

Newcastle United have endured a difficult season this time around.

In fact, Eddie Howe is thought to be considering a variety of factors behind the scenes as to why this year’s malaise is so different from last, including the injury crisis and recruitment problems from the previous summer.

Nonetheless, Newcastle has not had a terrible year. This season, they have defeated Chelsea, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, both Manchester clubs, and the aggressive Aston Villa (twice). It might be a whole lot worse heading into the FA Cup quarterfinals and possibly still having a chance to qualify for the Europa League.

Without a certain Anthony Gordon, it very certainly would have been. The £40 million former Everton winger has been praised as one of the Premier League’s standouts this season after a challenging first few months at the team.

Now, Kieran Trippier, the captain of the team, wants to see him rewarded.

Speaking after collecting his North East Football Writers’ Association Award, Trippier called for Gordon’s inclusion in the next England squad.

“I hope so,” he said (via the FWA’s X account).

“He’s had an incredible season. This season, he has undoubtedly been [constant]. Although I’m not the manager, I would definitely choose him if I were. He simply needs to carry on doing what he is doing for Newcastle and not worry about the England scenario.

Prior to the Three Lions’ matches against Brazil and Belgium later this month, Gareth Southgate will announce his next team in the upcoming weeks.

Anthony Gordon: England’s loss would be Newcastle’s gain

Gordon is deserving of a call-up. This season, just nine players in the Premier League—many of them natural strikers—have scored more goals than him. Gordon is currently one of the most prolific English footballers around, having also recorded five assists.

Though it is definitely a step below senior level, he also played brilliantly for the England U21s as they won the European Championships last summer, suggesting that he is well-suited for international football.

Nevertheless, Newcastle would win and England would lose. Having him relax for the last stretch of the campaign over the international break can hardly be a negative thing, from a purely club-centric (and rather selfish) perspective.
