Dan Plumley has maintained that Celtic’s lead over Rangers may have been squandered following their victory in the Scottish Premiership the previous year.
Following Stephen McGowan’s insistence that the Bears used their creative licence during the January transfer window while the Hoops had millions burning a hole in their pocket, this occurred.
The football finance specialist acknowledged that, with Rangers leading the league right now, the financial advantage in Scotland belongs to whoever finishes first and automatically qualifies for the Champions League. However, it can be squandered.
“It’s different tactics,” he said to Ibrox News only.
“You can look at the dynamics and track that back financially as well. The club that wins the Champions League and the title automatically has the financial advantage.”
You can waste that advantage, of course, but that’s where you need to be more strategic. If your team finishes second among Rangers and Celtic, for example, you’ll need to modify your plans, and given the structure of Scottish football, it’s likely that things will stay that way for a while. We haven’t seen a team be able to change that.
It does imply a different shift in tactics. The question is, though, if these are calculated plays or whether there is a plan A and a plan B depending on how the season ends.
“As we all know, there is a significant revenue swing associated with the Champions League distribution, so occasionally you may find yourself slightly forced to the advantage. Nevertheless, it’s not always as simple as winning the championship, collecting the bonus, and everything will turn out perfectly because both clubs are under pressure and the market will fluctuate.”

It was thought that Rangers had already given up their slim advantage at the top of the league after losing at Motherwell, only for Celtic to fall against Hearts.
It would be enormous to win and earn automatic qualification for the Champions League, especially considering that the coefficient might be poised to shift once more.
