In an effort to avert a “disastrous” situation, Everton and Tottenham have resumed negotiations over a transfer for Dele Alli, according to The Express.
The Toffees will have to pay the English midfielder’s fellow Premier League team £10 million if he plays in seven more games.
Spurs are reportedly amenable to a term adjustment, though, so Everton will have more motivation to play Dele if he recovers from his injury.
“Should Alli reach 20 appearances for Everton before the end of his contract, the Toffees will have to fork out £10m, which could be disastrous for the already cash-stretched Merseyside club,” the Daily Express reported on March 3.
The Toffees are in danger of receiving another point deduction for financial fair play violations after already receiving one this season.
“Since the current terms of the contract discourage Everton from playing Alli, Tottenham is reportedly pursuing a change that would compel them to pay regardless.”
Prior to his injury last year, Everton rejected a proposal very similar to this one; nonetheless, talks between the two teams are now resumed. It’s said that the Toffees are keen to work out a new contract with Spurs and re-sign the attacking midfielder.
The Dele Alli dilemma needs to be resolved by Everton and Tottenham.
It makes sense that Everton would feel uneasy giving Tottenham £10 million, thus Dele won’t reach 20 appearances.
That is unfair to the 27-year-old, who, after putting his injury and personal problems behind him, will probably just want to play football.
Thus, it would be better for both Everton and Tottenham to reach a fresh understanding, or for the player to just go on come summertime.
Spurs have suffered a significant setback as Dele has not yet cost the Toffees anything beyond his salary, despite their expectations of close to £40 million.
Since Dele’s finest days are sadly behind him, Everton would prefer to use that money to sign a new player should the 777 Partners takeover proceed.
However, if negotiations are really on between the Toffees and Spurs, this is at least a step in the right direction for Dele to be given the opportunity to launch his career.
