The Wearside team has had a difficult season. Michael Beale took over as manager in December after Tony Mowbray was fired, but he was only in the position for two months before Mike Dodds was chosen by the management to wrap up the season in the dugout.
This is Sunderland’s second loss under Dodds since he was named temporary manager, thus far the assistant hasn’t changed the team’s fortunes. Sunderland lost to the Canaries.
Jack Clarke’s injury hurts Sunderland
Jack Clarke
Naturally, no one is holding Dodds responsible for the current situation, given that he took over a dysfunctional club and that Jack Clarke’s injury hasn’t helped him either. This season, the winger has been outstanding for Sunderland, scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances. However, he has missed the last two games due to an ankle ligament injury and is expected to be out for at least five weeks.
Many commentators believe that Sunderland’s inability to demonstrate the kind of form required to contend for promotion this season is mostly due to Clarke’s absence.
Additionally, Black Cats supporter Jack Austwicke told FLW that they have little chance of unexpectedly making it to the playoffs since he believes Clarke’s time is running up.I think it was, anyway, to be fair, our chances were astronomically slim with Clarke. Without him, there is literally no chance.“You watch us against Norwich, granted we haven’t been amazing, but at least we’ve got some sort of presence in the final third, someone who can make something happen. I just don’t see where we’re going to score goals from or win games. I can’t see it.
“There’s just nothing, absolutely nothing going forward. We weren’t horrendous at Norwich, but it’s just a really hard watch. This time last year, I was at Norwich 12 months ago, and it was a totally different team. We beat them 1-0, and a year on I can’t believe how much it’s fallen off. “This season right now is a write off, no play-offs, so we’ll just have to regroup and go again next season, probably without Clarke again.” The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light ahead of the summer window, with the likes of West Ham and Crystal Palace among the clubs credited with an interest in the attacker. Clarke’s agent, Ian Harte, has also talked upthe possibility that the player could secure a transfer in the next window.
