The Chiefs conducted a formal interview with Patrick Paul.
The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly spoke with a tackle prospect at the 2024 NFL Combine on Saturday. The Chiefs were given the opportunity to speak with Houston tackle Patrick Paul, according to Aaron Wilson of KPCR2.
Paul, a native of Houston and a 3-star recruit, committed locally in 2018. Paul started five games at left tackle for the Cougars as a freshman and sophomore while allowing zero sacks. In his junior year, Paul took over as the starting left tackle, and he has played in more than 2,500 snaps since then.
Paul, a senior in his fifth year of college, is credited with just surrendering five sacks during his extensive tenure. Paul was selected for the All-AAC squad in 2021 and 2022, and in 2022 and 2023, he was appointed captain of the team.
Paul is a reported 6’7″ and 315 pound tackle, making him a perfect physical specimen. Paul is presently ranked 41st on the Arrowhead Addict Big Board among our prospects. Any coaching staff will be enticed by Paul’s unteachable size, outstanding resume, and expertise.
Paul’s reliability in pass protection is one of his strongest qualities. He consistently locates his pass set without wasting any motion. Paul may stonewall any rusher attempting to enter by moving swiftly along the arc. The rep ends the moment he touches you. Throughout his career, his hand usage has also improved.
Paul’s primary physical shortcoming makes him a mediocre run blocker at best. In the open, in space, Paul is not going to be a weapon. He may become more susceptible to speed rushers as a result. He has been able to depend on the fact that he is larger and stronger than 95% of the opponents he has faced at Houston up until this time.
There are concerns about Paul’s physical upside as a prospect given his age of 24. There are many reasons to believe in him, including his size, pass protection, and experience, but his ceiling as a prospect is probably a Day 2 pick.
Does the Chiefs think Patrick Paul makes sense?
As long as Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback, the Chiefs will be unable to select a left tackle in the draft. Good tackle prospects simply don’t come up that late. Although there are an occasional few exceptional left tackles selected in the draft, this is not a frequent occurrence.
The good news is that Paul possesses the arm length, size, and pass protection that the Chiefs value most in a tackle. Even though he has shortcomings, it’s not very frequent to find a tackle who can play outside at the next level and has this much experience at left tackle.
With the potential of Wawanan Taylor filling in at left tackle as well, a Patrick Paul vs. Wanya Morris camp duel seems like a very secure bottom for the tackle position. Paul shares a physical appearance and style of play with Orlando Brown. Although Paul has a smoother, more athletic style, it’s clear to see how his career path parallels Brown’s in Kansas City.
The Chiefs might benefit from having a starting left tackle on rookie salary, particularly with Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey potentially signing extensions. The Chiefs’ offensive line will need to become more economical.
In summary
Patrick Paul is a skilled and accomplished left tackle prospect who possesses above-average pass protection abilities and unteachable length. He turns 25 in his debut season and is vulnerable to speed rushers. He has the potential to be a starting left tackle who is above average with time and good coaching.
