The annoying thing about Philippe Clement’s time managing the Rangers is that despite his successes, he has never been able to select his best starting lineup.
He has never had a fully fit team, and the manager of the Gers is out of choices going forward, which is more bad news on the injury front before Motherwell’s visit to Ibrox.
With one hand tied behind his back, Philippe Clement still works miracles, but the most recent Rangers defeat may force him to shift his pack.
Rangers’ attacking options under Philippe Clement are once again limited.
In terms of his attacking players, the coach must now make due without Rabbi Matondo, Abdallah Sima, Todd Cantwell, Danilo, and Oscar Cortes.
Among those players, one may argue that he would have the strongest front four.
The number 10 slot is badly depleted with Sam Lammers out on loan, no Ianis Hagi, and Alex Lowry still recovering from an injury.
Although Tom Lawrence has been excellent lately, we can’t keep pushing him to the limit. Sadly, given the news that Cortes will likely be out for some time, we may not have much of a choice.
Of the remaining players, Lawrence has spent the majority of his time on the attack’s left flank.
Although he has been a central player for the Rangers this season, he possesses the technical skill and intellect to return to his previous role.
If he does, Philippe Clement will have two choices for number ten: Mohamed Diomande, a more practical and natural midfielder, or Fabio Silva, a more offensive option.
The second option available to Clement is to start Ross McCausland or Scott Wright on the left, but we need goals right now and they haven’t performed well enough to be starting important games.
Even if Dujon Sterling isn’t a natural winger, he makes up for it with his physical presence and directness; we’ve seen how adaptable he is to any position.
With any luck, Cantwell and Matondo won’t be out for too long. Lowry would be a nice addition to the team to offer depth and cover at both spots.
It would be a truly amazing accomplishment if Clement can keep up his winning streak despite the quantity and calibre of players he is missing.
Not that if he didn’t, he would offer justifications.
