49ers Hire Nick Sorensen as Defensive Coordinator and Hire Brandon Staley

It appears that Sorensen is a rising coach. Which raises the issue of why Staley is present.

The 49ers have finally brought on one or more defensive coordinators.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Nick Sorensen has been promoted from defensive coordinator to pass game coordinator for the 49ers. Furthermore, though it hasn’t been verified, the franchise has brought on former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, most likely as an assistant coach.

Let’s take Sorensen first.

He has never called plays or served as a defensive coordinator, but he did have experience as a defensive back for the Seahawks for eight years, thus he can be considered a product of Pete Carroll’s system. Prior to joining the 49ers as an assistant in 2022, Sorensen spent a year in Jacksonville as the special teams coordinator. He was elevated to the position of nickels coach and pass game coordinator in 2023, therefore he bore a major portion of the blame for Deommodore Lenoir’s quick development.

It appears that Sorensen is a rising coach. Which raises the issue of why Staley is present.

It is not an ascending coach, Staley. He is not successful. A fired head coach. Despite coaching great defensive players like Derwin James, Khalil Mack, and Joey Bosa, he was fired by the Chargers in the middle of the season because of his awful play.

While having Staley on the team couldn’t harm, Sorensen doesn’t seem to be confident in his hiring. Had Sorensen been the team’s top pick, Staley would not have been hired weeks ago. Rather, they apparently contacted Steve Spagnuolo to see if he was interested, and then, early on Saturday morning, while everyone was still asleep, they made the announcement about Sorensen and Staley.

I’m assuming that while the team is worried about Sorensen’s readiness and would rather have Brandon Staley in that role, the players like him and want him to be the defensive coordinator. Thus, they reached a deal. presumably gave the players what they wanted and brought in Staley to act as Sorensen’s go-to person.

This indicates that Sorensen is not as powerful or influential as Steve Wilks was. The club currently has Sorensen’s substitute on the pitch. If he has trouble, the 49ers have Staley available to replace him if needed during the season.

One might reasonably speculate as to whether Sorensen will still be the 49ers defensive coordinator in a year or whether he will be let go, as Wilks was.

Nick, no pressure.
