Signed by GvB, now worth less than Dowell: Rangers had a mare on “poor” 6ft 1 dud

Glasgow Rangers lead the Premiership table as March begins with 11 straight victories.

It’s fair to argue that Philippe Clement has elevated the Gers from Michael Beale’s underachieving squad to a contender for a triple. Add a win in the League Cup and the next week’s Europa League last 16 matchup against Benfica.

The Belgian did this while taking over a team that the Englishman had built throughout the summer, although several high-profile recruits had fallen short of expectations in the first few months of the new campaign.

Nearing the end of the season, everything seemed to be coming together beautifully. The Ibrox crowd will love Clement even more if he wins a few more trophies.

During the summer transfer window, he will have the chance to raise the level of his squad and cut loose some deadwood; one player in particular may become surplus to requirements.

The sum of Rangers’ acquisition of Ben Davies

After Giovanni van Bronckhorst was appointed manager in November of the previous year, he found himself in a similar situation in the summer of 2022.

The Dutchman won the Scottish Cup, the first championship the Gers had won since 2009, and led Rangers to the heartbreaking Europa League final.

The main objective for the 2022–2023 season was to win back the Premiership, as the Ibrox club was unable to defend their title.

Because of this, the former Feyenoord manager had to spend a lot of money on players like Rabbi Matondo, Ridvan Yilmaz, and Ben Davies in addition to Antonio Colak.

To secure his signature, the Gers actually had to pay Liverpool a considerable sum of money—£4 million.

The Englishman has spent 18 months on Merseyside, but he hasn’t played for Anfield. However, his Championship expertise from time spent at Sheffield United and Preston North End implies that his signing might bolster the defence.

Davies has not performed up to the £4 million transfer cost since joining more than two years ago, and as a result of his subpar play, his market value has substantially decreased.

The Rangers’ market valuation for Ben Davies

Football Transfers estimates that the centre defender is currently worth €1.7 million (£1.4 million), and at this rate, it is unlikely that his value will increase anytime soon.

Early in his Glasgow career, his price reached as high as €5.2m (£4.4m); however, this value subsequently collapsed due to a series of poor performances.

The defender is even less valuable than Kieran Dowell, who has struggled to make a significant impact since joining the Rangers last summer, and has only appeared in 12 games this season under both Beale and Clement.

Rangers’ market worth in Kieran Dowell

The midfielder was presented to the fans during their last home game of the season against Hearts after signing a pre-contact deal before the end of the 2022–2023 campaign.

Dowell had participated in more than 100 Championship games while playing in the South, where he recorded 12 assists and scored 26 goals, giving the impression that he could provide something more to the Gers offence.

But the 26-year-old hasn’t really shown his genuine ability for the club on a regular basis because of injury issues.
