Nottingham Forest set to land ‘draconian’ six-point deduction

Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness has “no doubt” that Nottingham Forest will now face a six-point deduction for their PSR breach.

In an interview with Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who ran a football consultancy advising elite clubs and was CEO of Villa from 2016 to 2018 in addition to serving as CEO of Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009, stated that he feels the Everton appeal’s decision validates Forest’s deduction.

In their 2022–2023 accounts, Forest was accused of going above the maximum losses permitted by Premier League financial regulations.

Their trial is scheduled to start soon, and a decision is anticipated before the season is out.

“Any breach of rule E.51 (i.e. any PSR Calculation showing losses of over £105m over the relevant period) warrants a points deduction, and nothing less than a points deduction,” the independent commission declared in response to Everton’s appeal.

Six-point deduction is “too harsh” for Nottingham Forest, says ex-CEO

According to the documents from Everton’s appeal, which were made public by Football Insider, Forest is eligible for a point deduction.

Wyness told Football Insider, “I’m afraid it does look like that Forest will receive a six-point penalty.”

“From what I’ve been reading, it looks like a fairly minor breach involving more than one player.

“Unless there are extenuating circumstances that I’m not aware of, I don’t think there’s any doubt that there will have to be a deduction of some kind in points.”

“I still think that kind of punishment is inappropriate.

“It seems harsh, and I hope the commission considering this realises that a fine, a transfer restriction, or a suspended points deduction could be the wisest course of action going forward.

“This is still too harsh, in my opinion.”
