Everton CEO responds to points deduction appeal verdict

I, along with every Evertonian, had been anxiously anticipating the resolution of our appeal against the unfair 10-point deduction that we received in November. We were informed of the Appeal Board’s ruling on Monday, and we will be bringing four more points to our total when we play West Ham at Goodison today.

There has been a significant deal of confusion during the lengthy period that has elapsed since the first commission’s ruling was made. I would like to officially express my gratitude to the several organised fan clubs and the larger fan community for their ardent support of the Club and the team throughout these trying times.

Additionally, I appreciate your understanding and patience during this process, as well as the proactive work done by the Fan Advisory Board in providing the Appeal Board with a statement that elucidated the impact on supporters.

All we could do was file an appeal against what we believed to be an unfair deduction of points. But, the uncertainty undoubtedly affected everyone at the Club as we navigated the legal system and respected it in order to develop what we believed to be a strong case for appeal.

In this difficult time, the incredible support and backing of the supporters for the team and the Club was vital. The enthusiasm, support, and dedication of every fan for the Club, whether at Goodison Park and during away games, never ceases to astound me. It is the thing that sets our club apart and inspires admiration.

The voyage did not end with Monday’s announcement, of course. For the accounting period that concluded in June 2023—two weeks following my appointment as interim CEO—we are still putting the finishing touches on our case against our second PSR charge. As the campaign’s pivotal final stretch draws near, it is critical that players, staff, and supporters remain united.

We were very pleased with the Appeal Board’s ruling to reverse the initial commission’s conclusion that the Club had not acted in the best interests of good faith, as stated in our statement earlier this week. Our primary points of contention at the appeal hearing were this and the sanction’s consistency in comparison to previous penalties issued by the League and other governing bodies. It’s also the reason we believe our ardent pursuit of the appeal has been justified.

In light of this, I also want to express my gratitude to our legal counsel and everyone who helped to support our appeal. I have personally witnessed the commitment, tenacity, and consideration that have gone into making our case. That work is highly valued and is still going strong.

At this point in the second commission hearing, neither the Club nor I are allowed to provide any information about the arguments that will be made due to Premier League regulations and legal advice. But rest assured, we will put together the strongest defence we can.

Our goal on the field is to accumulate as many points as we can in the 12 games we have left.

Everton points deduction appeal verdict: What happens next?

Naturally, we now realise that our last game at our cherished Goodison Park is in 14 months. We shall cherish every matchday at the Grand Old Lady, knowing that it will be the most poignant of days as we bid each other farewell. Season ticket renewals for the 2024–2025 campaign have received a very good reaction, which is more proof of the growing excitement for that historic campaign.

We will reveal additional plans and information about how we want to cap off our last season at Goodison in a way that will be really unforgettable in the coming weeks and months.

Of course, we are also looking forward to the new stadium, which is essential to our success going forward. Our new house will present enormous commercial prospects. In contrast to Goodison, it will give us access to an arena that can host, amuse, and deliver experiences 365 days a year, greatly increasing our earnings in the process. In order to strengthen our commercial capabilities at Everton Stadium, we must seize the opportunities that lie ahead with a well-defined strategy.

Much work is being done to make sure we take full advantage of this opportunity and are well-prepared for the relocation. We also look forward to releasing information about the type and scope of some of the new business opportunities, as well as how they will improve the Everton Stadium experience.

It’s an exciting time, and I want to express my gratitude to our commercial team for creating and securing these chances via their perseverance, hard work, and ingenuity.

We are also working on the procedures that fans will be able to follow when they relocate to our new location. We sent out a migration survey to thousands of Blues before Christmas, and hundreds of them participated in focus groups that were organised in the last few weeks. Once the consultation process is over, it will guarantee that our final ideas are just, understandable, and influenced by you. We’re excited to work on that migration strategy and present it throughout the first part of the upcoming season.

Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.
