Breaking: Jose Cifuentes opens up on Ibrox exit, shares who wanted him before Cruzeiro switch

Prior to moving to Cruzeiro in January, Jose Cifuentes disclosed that he was being pursued by a few Russian teams for a transfer.

The Ecuadorian international was only leased to the Brazilian team for a year, with the option to buy, even though he had just arrived at Ibrox in August.

Cifuentes might have continued living in Europe with an unidentified Russian club, but that was not feasible due to Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

According to The Scotsman [1 March], he stated, “There were two Russian teams who wanted to sign me.”

Due to the ongoing conflict, it was not possible to carry out the plan because European teams are currently prohibited from accepting sponsorship from Russian teams.

Two teams expressed interest: one from the English Championship and the other from Turkey. But there would have been an issue because it would have been a five-month loan, which would have required them to move their family once more after they had already had to adjust to life in Scotland.

“Therefore, I’m in Brazil because I had to decide what was best for them. It was a bright day last week when I made my Cruzeiro debut.

“I spent the six months I was with Rangers without seeing the sun. Everything was always chilly. However, I think I’ll fit in here very well because of my good fitness.

“My preferred position is as an attacking midfielder, but I adjust my positioning to suit the needs of the team I play for.”

Jose Cifuentes is already being overlooked by the Rangers.

Although Cifuentes left on loan at first, it seems reasonable to believe that his six-month stay in Glasgow is coming to an end.

Cifuentes and Sam Lammers were the biggest busts of a summer filled with, at best, erratic transfer activity.

After joining the Gers from Los Angeles FC, Cifuentes had high expectations, and the team received a lot of interest in signing him.

But in the end, Philippe Clement determined he was no longer required as he was unable to establish his indispensable status.

In total, Cifuentes made just six starts in the Scottish Premiership, and in a few years, supporters are unlikely to remember him.

Although he signed a four-year contract last summer, that is officially the day his Ibrox term is supposed to expire, but he won’t be sticking with it.

Nonetheless, the fact that numerous teams expressed interest in him in January speaks much, and he has every reason to believe that he can now restart his career in South America.
