49ers interview Raiders safeties coach for DC position
Gerald Alexander was appointed as the new safeties coach by the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this year. He’s also already thinking about getting promoted to a different team.
Alexander reportedly conducted an interview for the open defensive coordinator position with the San Francisco 49ers, as reported by Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
Gerald Alexander, a former defensive back in the NFL, played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for the previous two seasons. In 2020, he started working as a coach for the Miami Dolphins. He worked as a college coach for California, Montana State, Washington, Indiana State, and Arkansas State before entering the NFL.
Other names that have been connected to the 49ers’ open defensive coordinator position this summer are:
- David Merritt, current defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs
- Brandon Staley, former Los Angeles Chargers coach
- Nick Sorenson, current defensive passing game/nickels coach for the 49ers
- Daniel Bullocks, current defensive backs coach for the 49ers
Barrows mentioned that Alexander and Bullocks were formerly teammates in a follow-up post. In 2008, the two were teammates with the Detroit Lions.
Shortly after the 49ers’ Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Chiefs, they fired former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Wilks spent just one season in San Francisco.
