Barcelona have made effort to appoint former Everton manager to replace Xavi.
Plenty many managers have come through the door at Goodison Park in recent years.
Frank Lampard, Ronald Koeman, Carlo Ancelotti and Marco Silva to mention a few. For the most part, tenures at Everton have been quite short-term affairs.
However, one manager that survived nearly three years was Roberto Martinez. The former Wigan boss was appointed in June 2013 and departed the club in May 2016.
.
The 50-year-old took command of 143 matches during his stint on Merseyside and averaged 1.52 points per game, which is by no means a terrible return.
Now the Spaniard is the Portgual manager, having previously spent four years in command of Belgium’s national side.
Barcelona make approach for Martinez
Despite only taking the Portugal post in January 2023, Martinez has been connected with one of the major jobs in European football.
According to Football Transfers, Barcelona have contacted the former Everton boss over the idea of replacing Xavi as head coach in time for the 2024/25 season.
Xavi will quit the club at the end of the season after spending three years in charge of the Catalan giants
.
The report states there is no obvious favourite for the post currently, with Rafa Marquez and Roberto De Zerbi mentioned.
Martinez is said to have been approached with an initial one-year deal on the table. The Spaniard might take the role with his current position as Portugal’s head coach.
The former Everton boss was approached for the post back in 2021 following the firing of Koeman.
Barcelona obviously have an interesting way of operating nowadays.
Considering Martinez’s managerial career hasn’t been the most eye-catching, it’s a shock to see his name associated with one of the biggest roles on the planet.
He should have done something with the Belgium national side, for Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and Romelu Lukaku not to threaten a major title leaves a serious mark on his record.
The Spaniard hasn’t managed a club side since he was stripped of his duties at Goodison Park. If he takes the Barcelona post, seeing how he fairs will be intriguing.
