Which corner should be re-signed?

Which cornerback, out of Stephon Gilmore and Jourdan Lewis, would you rather the Cowboys re-sign? Both are free agents. Lewis is five years younger than Gilmore and has been a consistent contributor for the entirety of his time in Dallas, despite Gilmore being bigger and having a more distinguished career. Who would be better to keep?- Donovan McDonald, Georgia, Atlanta

Nick Eatman: It doesn’t have to be either, and I don’t think he needs to be either. Given Bland and Diggs, who is recovering from an ACL injury, as their only cornerbacks, I would believe the Cowboys would prefer depth at the position. It makes sense to acquire another veteran in that manner, considering they acquired Gilmore through a trade last year. Given his age and the injury he will be dealing with for the majority of the offseason, Gilmore might not ask for a big contract. Lewis demonstrated his continued value last year. Lewis would be my first choice if I had to sign just one player, but I could consider doing what I did last year, which would be to exchange next year’s pick for a seasoned player who could start right away.

Patrik: To be honest, I don’t see any reason why the two can’t go back. Both have demonstrated their capacity to perform at a very high level in their respective professions, but neither will ever come close to being a market leader. At best, Lewis is a glue guy and an incredibly talented starter; at worst, he’s a reliable depth piece. Lewis was the undisputed ballhawking nickel corner in the years before DaRon Bland, and he battled back from a career-threatening foot injury to once again have a significant impact on games. Lewis is also a member of the team’s Leadership Council and is always mentoring Bland and others. Gilmore, who also serves as a mentor to the entire group of Dallas wide receivers (all on a one-year contract), helped Lewis and Bland save the day when Trevon Diggs tore his ACL. The veteran should be ready for the start of the 2024 season after battling through a torn labrum to try and will the Cowboys to victory in the playoffs. Given their skill set and price, I believe they should both be added back into the mix. They are both quite rare in this level. Furthermore, the Gilmore-Diggs-Bland-Lewis faction was taken from us in 2023, wasn’t that right?
