SPFL boss shares Celtic and Rangers trend fear over iconic fixture as missiles could spark drastic action
Reduced allocations have been made for the Celtic derby and Rangers, and Hearts manager Steven
Naismith is worried that the Edinburgh rivalry with Hibs may suffer in a similar manner.
Lawrence Shankland, a striker for the Jambos, was targeted with missiles during a 1-1 draw with the
Easter Road team. After Emiliano Marcondes’ first goal, the Scotland international scored the equalizer
from the penalty spot as items were hurled from the away team towards the striker.
Matches between Rangers and Celtic have had no away fans in them this term. Back in September, it was
claimed the Ibrox club offered their rivals over 700 tickets, but it was turned down by
the Premiership champions due to safety fears.
Naismith says incidents like the one in the Hearts and Hibs clash on Wednesday could see away
supporter numbers reduced. He said: “All the stuff getting launched on, it’s just not acceptable.
If that is examined further, they will simply limit the number of spectators allowed inside that stand,
which will negatively affect the derby’s intense rivalry and, in my opinion, pleasant atmosphere.
“Students are the ones who will ruin the celebration for everyone.” Coins, vape pens, and other items
that were in everyone’s pockets, I believe, were the main culprits. It’s simply insufficient, period.”
Celtic will play Hearts this weekend. The Hoops head to Gorgie on high spirits after crushing Dundee 7-
1, while the 1-1 draw puts them 12 points clear of third place.
