One Nottingham Forest player has posted in fury on Instagram after Wednesday night’s clash with Manchester United.
A player for Nottingham Forest expressed his annoyance over a contentious call made during Wednesday night’s cup match against Manchester United. The Red Devils advanced to the FA Cup quarterfinals with a last-minute goal from midfielder Casemiro, who headed in a free kick from close range.
However, the goal was contentious because it took the VAR many minutes to review and approve it. However, many people were outraged by the goal, including some Liverpool supporters. When the free kick was awarded, Raphael Varane was offside and facing away from the goal, which appeared to hinder a Forest player from continuing his run.
The Premier League seems to frequently overlook this kind of offside, but after Liverpool’s goal in the Carabao Cup final was disallowed for a nearly identical occurrence, the rule of interfering has come under closer scrutiny. Wataru Endo was flagged for being offside as he turned to face the incorrect direction and stopped a defensive player’s advance before Virgil van Dijk could head the next free kick home.
Fans of Liverpool and Forest are enraged because United got away with the identical incident just a few days later. The Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White further expressed his annoyance on Instagram by sharing a picture of the United goal side by side with the picture of the disallowed Liverpool goal to highlight the alleged discrepancy.
Given their quarterfinal berth and their scheduled matchup at Old Trafford with Liverpool in the following round, United won’t mind at this point. However, it will be fascinating to see whether the FA offers an explanation for the discrepancy, and if Forest and/or Liverpool insist on one.
