Jamie Carragher’s theory over Nottingham Forest and Everton points deduction difference

Nottingham Forest and Everton are facing charges of breaching Premier League finance rules.

According to Jamie Carragher, Everton might receive a lighter sentence than Nottingham Forest for the Premier League financial allegations that were made against them in January.

The Toffees’ 10-point deduction from November for the violations from the previous season was lowered to six on Monday, but they, like Forest, are still under the cloud of the most recent accusations. April is when a decision on these is anticipated, but any appeals procedure could drag on past the season’s conclusion.

The idea of receiving two punishments in one season for two of the years they have already been penalised for has enraged Everton supporters. The Premier League Profit & Sustainability regulations evaluate the financial period over a rolling three-year period.

A club may only lose up to £105 million in these three years; Everton will exceed this limit in 2022 and 2023. Due to regulations, losses from the last two of those three years carry over to the current three-year period.

Everton fans’ complaints stem from changes made to the Premier League’s financial procedures, which now require clubs to turn in their season-ending financial statements by December 31. These changes expedite the process for “simple” financial infractions, enabling penalties to be imposed during the current season.

With the implementation of this modification in December of last year, Forest and Everton had to turn in their cash reports by New Year’s Eve. Following that, both clubs were accused of going over their cash-loss caps and risking point deductions between 2022 and 2024.

Because this is the first time a team has been penalised for such an incident, Carragher stated that the reduction to Everton’s November penalty “feels about right.” He continued, “No one really knows what the right punishment should be.”

Given their prior punishment, the former Liverpool player thinks Everton may receive a lighter sentence than Forest, who are new to the league.

“Everton’s sanction is from last season, whereas the Nottingham Forest situation is from this season,” Carragher stated on the Sky Bet-sponsored Stick to Football podcast. The issue with Everton, though, is that the current punishment comprises two [years from the prior two], making it a three-year period.

They are arguing that since two of the charges are included in the three years of punishment already, we cannot be punished for an additional six points after serving our sentence for the first two years.

“I predict Nottingham Forest will likely receive six [points], and Everton will likely receive one or two.”
