Derek Ferguson says Leon King ought to be asking Rangers to let him go on a summer loan.
Only nine minutes of Scottish Premiership football have been played by the 20-year-old Ibrox academy product this season; his lone other appearance was a cameo in the 2-0 Scottish FA Cup victory against Ayr United on February 10.
King, who made nine league starts the previous season, is not in Philippe Clement’s favor. Chris Jack speculated on the Rangers Review on February 21 that the young player might be one of three permitted to depart this summer as the manager tries to bolster his defense.
Speaking only to Ibrox News, Ferguson believes that King should be getting more first-team experience at this point, but he also thinks that going on loan could be the best course of action.
He stated, “I think he’s served his apprenticeship, but it’s always great to see the guys coming through the academies and getting in the squad. He’s had a lack of game time.”
“My understanding is that once you’ve gone through the process of attempting to join the first team squad, you’re a man and no longer a little lad when you reach the age of 20 or 21.
Going out and gaining experience is crucial if you’re not going to be on the first team. Play, at whatever level you want, is the only way to achieve it.
It might be League One or Two in England, or it might be the Championship in Scotland. He hasn’t played a lot of first-team football, so I think it’s crucial for the young kids to get out and play.
“I would prefer that he declare his desire to play football for the first team and go on loan.” I detest it when I witness young players merely occupying the background.
“I want them to compete for their spots, go out and prove the manager wrong, play well for another football team, and try to return in a better way.”

Ferguson’s offer seems intriguing, and it’s likely that several teams would be eager to get him on a loan for the upcoming season.
Nevertheless, he has spent enough time with the first squad for Rangers to determine whether or not he will be a part of the long-term plan at Ibrox.
Is it realistically a smart idea for the club to send him out on loan if it is evident that he will not be playing going forward?
King is old enough to play frequently, but it’s possible that a long-term departure would be preferable for him.
