Mason Holgate, who played for Southampton and Sheffield United, has had an unmemorable season thus far.
Despite making seven appearances for the Saints, the 27-year-old was unable to establish himself on the South Coast.
Not a great start to his Sheffield United career. In his debut match, Holgate’s team lost 5-0 to Aston Villa, and in his most recent match, against Brighton, he was sent off for a terrible tackle in the first half.
The defender has been ordered to play for the under-21 team and will be absent from Sheffield United for two weeks.
But there was finally some good news about Holgate last night.
Mason Holgate in the Swansea City match scorecard
The Blades under-21 team played Swansea City in the Premier League Cup on Monday night at Bramall Lane.
Holgate, Oliver Arblaster, Andre Brooks, and Will Osula were among Sheffield United’s strong lineup. The Everton loanee had a good night as he started the score in the team’s 5-1 victory.
Holgate will be sidelined for the forthcoming games against Brighton and Arsenal. Sheffield United has therefore mandated that he continue to be match-ready for the under-21 team.
For Mason Holgate, what’s next?
It’s difficult to predict what Holgate will do next.
At the age of 27, the fact that he has been moved out on loan twice suggests that Sean Dyche does not see him as a long-term player.
It hasn’t helped that he was red-carded against Brighton; a number of well-known commentators have made fun of his attempt to win the ball.
The send-off was an insane moment. Gary Lineker stated on The Rest is Football, “I think, really, he just tried to kick the ball hard and followed through and missed the ball.”
Sincerely. You are aware of the phenomenon known as slow motion, but if you see it at regular speed from a distance, I believe he attempted to kick the ball but missed it. Despite the apparent aggressiveness, I don’t believe he intentionally went and booted the man.
All of this focus that isn’t needed is directed on Holgate, who should be putting in the work to get back to his peak form, which has eluded him in recent years.
