Cowboys Draft FSU Star WR Coleman in Latest Mock

The NFL Scouting Combine is about to begin, and the Dallas Cowboys are focusing on “draft season” when press conferences take place on Tuesday. The Cowboys have holes to fill on their roster this offseason after yet another dismal season in which they were eliminated from the playoffs too soon. Is receiving one of those needs, though? The Cowboys passed on needy positions like offensive tackle or inside linebacker in favor of selecting Florida State receiver Keon Coleman with the No. 24 overall pick in the most recent first-round mock draft from The Athletic.

“The Cowboys have options here, but the offense has lacked a WR2 alongside CeeDee Lamb since the Amari Cooper trade,” Chris Vannini writes. “The 6-4 Coleman is a physical specimen who had 11 touchdowns on 50 catches for FSU last season. There’s no such thing as a 50-50 ball with Coleman, especially matched up against No. 2 cornerbacks. Give Dak Prescott another elite receiving weapon.”

Coleman is considered one of the top receivers available in this coming draft class and certainly seems to possess the potential to give Dak Prescott a second option alongside Lamb.

The former Michigan State Spartan has established himself in a competitive class of receivers after spending just two seasons in East Lansing before moving to Florida State in the offseason. Coleman led the Seminoles to a 12-1 season last year with 50 receptions for 658 yards and 11 touchdowns. Is it enough to pass on a linebacker even though the Cowboys didn’t receive the kind of production they may have hoped for from Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup last season? Cooks and Gallup combined for 1,075 yards and 10 touchdowns, whereas Lamb finished with 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns.

It is difficult to argue against the Cowboys’ need for depth at inside linebacker after Leighton Vander Esch’s neck injury last season left them shorthanded. This is especially true when compared to receivers, where 12 receivers are listed in the most recent NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah’s top-50 prospect rankings.
