Clement admits Rangers were like ‘Bambi on ice’ in win at Kilmarnock
Rangers, according to Philippe Clement, were like “Bambi on ice” on Rugby Park’s artificial surface before they held onto the Premiership’s top spot with a 2-1 comeback victory over Kilmarnock.
Danny Armstrong, a wide player for Killie, scored from the penalty in the eleventh minute following a handball by John Lundstram on a rainy evening.
The Gers captain James Tavernier’s signature free-kick and a goal from Tom Lawrence maintained the visitors two points ahead of Celtic after Gers keeper Jack Butland produced a fantastic save from Matty Kennedy early in the second half.
“Had we gone in front it’s a totally different game. But then after 10 minutes you get this penalty against you, which was a frustrating moment.
“You then have an opponent who sits back and waits for your mistakes to make counter attacks and to be dangerous.
“And in the first half, our tempo was too slow. We had to adjust for a while since this was a whole new level of football.
“There were times when I thought my players were Bambi on ice.” We discussed it at halftime and they had to adjust to that.
They were excellent after that. We possessed immense fortitude, a strong sense of rhythm, and a fierce determination. That’s a huge victory.
A hand ball by Lewis Mayo late in the game, in Clement’s opinion, should have resulted in a penalty for Rangers.
