Alan Shearer felt Blackburn Rovers were the better team against Newcastle United and insists they will have no fear about relegation if they can replicate that display.
In the FA Cup fifth round, Rovers took the Magpies to penalties, where they lost 4-3 following a 1-1 draw in extra time. John Eustace’s team played valiantly and had numerous opportunities to win the match.
In the first 90 minutes, Newcastle’s hero was Martin Dubaravka; in extra time, Aynsley Pears came on. Ultimately, the Premier League prevailed due to penalties.
Shearer, who represented both teams and was the focal point of the match, thought Rovers were superior and the better team that evening.
“I feel for Blackburn, Newcastle owe Dubravka a lot, he has been their best player tonight,” he stated on BBC One.
“He made some amazing stops in the extra time in the first 90 minutes, in addition to two penalty saves.
“They are in the next round because of him, and they owe him a huge debt.” They were extremely well-organized under John Eustace, and at times they gave Newcastle a very difficult time.
“In the full 90 minutes, they were undoubtedly the superior team. Their chances were better. In extra time, both teams had excellent opportunities that they were unable to convert.
Great work, John Eustace and Blackburn. They won’t have to worry about relegation if they play that way for the remainder of the season.”
Shearer was supported by Micah Richards and Gary Lineker, who praised Rovers’ performance.
Richards commented, “It’s so tough, they put in a great effort.”
“Although Newcastle appeared to be winning, they persevered and won on penalties, and I feel awful for Hyam.
“The pressure of taking a penalty, it’s not a nice way to go out. If they play like that in the Championship they’ll have no problems.
“Szmodics was one of the best players on the pitch. He missed but they can take so much confidence from their general play. They defended brilliantly and had good chances in transition. Overall, a few strong performances.”
Lineker added: “They deserve credit do Blackburn. It was an inspirational performance at times against higher opposition.
“Blackburn and John Eustace deserve a lot of credit. They did their team proud.”
