Everton were finally given some positive news this week after the Premier League handed back four points following their appeal against their 10-point deduction.
The Toffees were sent into the relegation zone after the worst points penalty in Premier League history. Sean Dyche’s team is currently five points ahead of the bottom three, sitting in 15th place.
The choice has been communicated to 777 Partners, the potential owners of Edenton. As they wait for Premier League approval, the US-based investment business is reportedly completely committed to starting work at Goodison.
Now that the second charge has been brought to light, the club will learn out their punishment in the middle of March. Everton and Nottingham Forest may also lose further points.
This intricate tale has additional complexity with the rumours that a decision will be made following the Premier League season.
For Everton, it feels like it’s very much out of the frying pan and into the fire.
Alan Shearer, who has been talking about the most recent Goodison Park news on the Rest is Football Podcast, has expressed that opinion.
Shearer raises Everton PSR charge concern
Speaking about the Premier League’s ruling, Shearer thinks that awarding back points was the proper move.
He remarked, “We felt that they would get three or four points back, like so many others did.”
“From what we understood the charges to be, we all thought the 10 points was a pretty harsh deduction, so it’s kind of not surprising.”
The former striker for Newcastle United did, however, express anxiety about the impending second accusation.
“But, and this is a big but, because of Nottingham Forest and the other charges that have been brought against them,” he continued.
“It’s going to be a month before we find out, but for now, Everton and their supporters have some excellent news.”
Premier League PSR shambles
The Premier League has, at best, handled the problem in an absurd manner.
Point totals should never be in doubt while the season is still competitive. Because of the ongoing accusations made against Everton and Forest, it seems as though a few of the teams in the bottom six are in misleading situations.
There has been discussion on the potential reduction of Everton’s second fee due to the assessment period overlap.
Sean Dyche will not face any additional punishment at the end of the season if he makes sure his team stays as far away from the relegation zone as feasible.
