Everton have finally learnt the outcome of their long-running appeal, over three weeks after the trial had ended.
Four more points. Although six points were lost, this feels much more like a positive than a negative after the first 10 points were taken away.
The Toffees have risen to the top of the Premier League table for the time being; it’s odd considering that the division tried to keep them there. Perhaps in the long term, that opinion will change.
Geoff Shreeves is the most recent person to comment on the best football story of the day, following Henry Winter and Alan Myers.
What Geoff Shreeves said about Everton’s appeal
The pundit and commentator on CBS Sports Golazo attempted to provide some clarity on a situation that is still, at best, unclear.
Let me get this straight, asked the presenter, who was obviously just as perplexed as many of the audience. They still have most of the points and the sanction against them, even if most of the punishment—or at least the part for which they are being found guilty—has been lifted. Can they file an appeal of a second ruling?
“No, that’s it,” would be Shreeves’ response. One appeal is present. I understand the procedure to have involved just one appeal and one ruling. That is all.
“As far as I understand it, a decision has been made regarding these specific charges and cannot be overturned.”
This will set a massive precedent for their second hearing, in which Nottingham Forest will also be placed in peril. Everton has finally received some reprieve.
Where does this appeal success leave Everton in the Premier League?
The decision is particularly significant because it puts them in a better position to avoid the relegation zone—they are now ranked 15th.
They used to be just one point above the bottom three, and Luton Town was always a threat when they had a game in hand.
They now have a five-point advantage, with Brentford and the Tricky Trees sandwiched in between.
The fact that so many teams now stand between them and those infamous spots in the league is reassuring, and perhaps it will inspire Sean Dyche’s team to play with a fresh sense of freedom that will propel them even further up the standings.
