Report reveals massive price tag on key Celtic star.
Atletico Madrid reportedly made an approach in January to sign the midfield player on loan, and then paid a cost of £18 million in the summer, according to the Danish publication Tipsbladet.
This kind of arrangement is growing more typical as clubs struggle to raise transfer payments during the January transfer window due to UEFA’s spending restrictions.
O’Riley was an excellent performer for Brendan Rodgers’ team in the earlier half of the season, so losing him while Reo Hatate is out injured would have been devastating to Celtic’s title ambitions.
According to Tipsbladet reports:
As to the information provided by Tipsbladet, the bid said that Atletico Madrid would have to commit to hiring Matt O’Riley in the springtime in order to purchase him this summer for 18 million pounds, or 156 million kroner, on a free transfer.
According to Tipsbladet’s sources, Atlético Madrid did not reply to Celtic’s demand that they only sell the 23-year-old profile for 25 million pounds, or 217 million kroner, after the latter rejected the purchase on the grounds that they valued Matt O’Riley far higher.
When O’Riley joined forces with Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate to form a potent midfield trio in January 2022, Ange Postecoglou attempted to sign the then Division One player.
Even though O’Riley signed an extended deal in September, Celtic will need to work hard to hang on to him this summer because the £25 million price tag is the same as what they received for Jota when they sold him to Al Ittihad last summer.
