Alex Neil verdict shared after former Sunderland boss linked with return.
According to reports, Sunderland could sign a familiar face this summer.
Sunderland is considering hiring former manager Alex Neil after Michael Beale’s dismissal last week.
Neil, 42, is presently unemployed after being fired by Stoke City in December, and the Potters have subsequently fallen into the Championship relegation zone.
Neil, a Scottish coach, led Sunderland to League One promotion in 2022 before taking over the Potters shortly after the 2022/23 Championship season began.
According to recent speculations, Sunderland may explore re-signing the former Norwich City and Preston North End boss.
James Copley wants the club to avoid an Alex Neil reunion.
Black Cats fans strongly oppose Neil’s proposed reunion.
According to journalist James Copley, bringing back Neil would be a negative move for Sunderland’s owners.
He expressed his view on the rumors about X, posting:
In terms of his work at Sunderland, absolutely. However, the way he left would make things extremely difficult.
Can he work under the existing “model” again? Don’t think so. Is he damaged goods after Stoke? Possibly yes.
Neil only managed 19 games for Sunderland, but he won 11 of them, giving him an excellent win percentage of 57.9%, despite several of those games being in League One.
Neil won 22 of his 66 games as Stoke City’s manager. However, despite a significant summer shopping binge before of the season, he was unable to galvanise a floundering Stoke City club.
Will Still remains the man for Sunderland.
Neil would not be a good fit for Sunderland.
While he remains a respected coach, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus must re-establish fan faith with his next appointment following the instability produced by Beale.
Reims’ Will Still is reportedly the ideal candidate for Sunderland’s next manager.
The 31-year-old is making waves in France, with a recent goal for Reims earning him praise.
Sunderland has until the summer to save enough for a suitable compensation fee for the Belgian-English coach, or to consider other potential additions to the Stadium of Light.
Dodds may still be considered for the job if he can improve on his current performance.
And anticipate Neil to be involved in discussions about Football League job openings in the coming months.
He has two EFL promotions to his CV, one at Sunderland and the other at Norwich City, and a wealth of expertise.
However, for the Black Cats, that boat has undoubtedly sailed, as Copley says, despite his earlier excellent performance on Wearside.
Neil has burned his bridges at Sunderland, and after Beale, the club does not require any further division between club and fan.
