The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly interested in multiple quarterbacks this offseason, but it’s unclear which one they’ll pursue. The Chicago Bears are expected to move on from Justin Fields this offseason, and the Raiders have been mentioned as a potential destination.
The hiring of Luke Getsy, Fields’ former offensive coordinator, may be a challenge for him. The hope is that the former first-round choice was hampered by ineffective coaching. It appears exceedingly unlikely that the Raiders will give Fields an opportunity. According to a February 26 X post by Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders’ interest in the quarterback is a two out of 10.
This would imply that the Raiders have little or no interest in Fields. It’s early in the offseason, so things could change, but it looks the organization will look into other QB alternatives. Getsy is more familiar with Fields and his abilities than most, so if he does not believe it is a good fit, the Raiders will most likely follow his lead.
Another insider also believes Justin Fields is not interested.
The Raiders’ beat reporters are skeptical of claims about their interest in Justin Fields. Vic Tafur of The Athletic had a similar opinion on Fields, predicting that the quarterback would be unlikely to visit Las Vegas.
“Luke Getsy was fired by the Bears as offensive coordinator and then hired by the Raiders because they thought Fields was the issue in Chicago and not Getsy,” Tafur said in an article published on February 22. “So, we’re not going to trade for Fields right now. “But…this is the Raiders, so we gotta put him on the list.”
Vincent Bonsignore and Tafur are not entirely ruling out a Fields addition. Perhaps if the Bears’ asking price drops to a fourth-round pick, the Raiders will consider jumping in, but a second-round pick appears far too much for the inconsistent quarterback. Fields will almost surely start at quarterback for a team next season, but it is becoming increasingly unlikely that that team will be the Raiders.
Will the Las Vegas Raiders Go After a Veteran?
In an ideal scenario, the Raiders would like to identify a young franchise quarterback to develop around for years. However, that is usually easier said than done. Las Vegas does not pick until No. 13 in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, so they must either move up or hope to land a high prospect.
Free agency occurs before the draft, thus the Raiders must have a good understanding of whether or not they will be able to select a top quarterback. If they choose not to sign a veteran, it may be a good indication of their intentions.
However, they might be risk-averse and sign a name like Kirk Cousins. He’d be able to lead a high-level offense for at least a few seasons as the Raiders look for a long-term option. Consider cheaper possibilities, such as Baker Mayfield or Jacoby Brissett. After a full summer, it’s possible that Aidan O’Connell may be given the opportunity to lead the attack.
