Although general manager declarations on deals involving star players have historically resulted in course corrections, Tom Telesco, the new front office manager of the Raiders, did made a noteworthy effort to guarantee that Davante Adams will not be leaving this season.
Telesco declared on Tuesday that Adams is a “raider.” After a stint as the top receiver for Green Bay teams headed for the playoffs, Adams had recently voiced excitement about returning for a third season in Las Vegas. However, the last two years have brought a step back from the spotlight and increased speculation about a possible exit.
This year, Adams was one of the athletes who endorsed Antonio Pierce. The Raiders traded first- and second-round picks for Adams, but neither Pierce nor Telesco were in their present positions at the time. Nevertheless, it seems clear that the new leadership wants to retain Adams as the team’s top wide receiver. This confirms a recent story that said, despite the changes that have happened since Adams’ arrival, the Raiders had no intention of parting ways with him.
The Jets were mentioned as having interest in Adams on several occasions. The AFC East side approached Adams, Mike Evans, or Tee Higgins about possible trades. Although none of the questions were answered, a report from December claimed the Jets had been keeping an eye on Adams ever since they acquired Aaron Rodgers. Naturally, the two spent eight seasons playing together in Green Bay. In 2022, Rodgers claimed to have tried to persuade Adams to remain with the Packers, but the latter made the decision to rejoin college teammate and lifelong buddy Derek Carr. Carr was cut during the one-year collaboration between Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler. Adams remained in Vegas, but in the last weeks of the McDaniels tenure, he vented his frustrations.
Despite appearing to be happier with the Raiders’ configuration under Pierce, Adams’ stats from 2022 nonetheless declined. Following an NFL-high 14 touchdown catches in his 1,516-yard Raiders debut, Adams finished 2023 with 1,144 yards and eight touchdown catches. Pierce has been open about the team’s severe need for an upgrade at quarterback. Adams is an expensive receiver on a team that is in transition. But in 2024, Adams and former Packers assistant Luke Getsy will get back together.
Earlier this month, Adams described Getsy as having “open-mindedness and, like I said, that innovation to the offense and a good run-pass balance” (via Gutierrez). And I’m accustomed to that West Coast vibe. Working on a new system that is also somewhat more recognizable will be enjoyable.
Telesco is giving a strong hint that the accomplished wideout is in the Raiders’ plans for the upcoming season, similar to what Bengals executive Duke Tobin did with Higgins at last year’s Combine. It is unclear who will be targeting Adams next season.
