Even though the Premier League released the appeal ruling on Monday (February 26), former Everton manager Keith Wyness maintained that the team “may not be finished yet.”
The 66-year-old, who ran a football consultancy advising elite clubs after serving as CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009, exclusively told Football Insider that the club may challenge certain aspects of the appeal ruling with the Premier League.
On Monday, February 26, it was confirmed that Everton’s point deduction for violating the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) was lowered from ten to six after filing an appeal.
Everton lodged nine objections regarding their 10-point punishment, of which the Premier League upheld two. The contents of the other seven complaints were denied and are not available to the public.
Following the appeal decision, the former Everton manager comments, “We may not be finished yet.”
For a different PSR rule violation, Sean Dyche’s team may be subject to additional sanctions; a hearing about this matter is anticipated to take place prior to the conclusion of the 2023–24 season.
“I think the club will err on the side of accepting the appeal verdict and moving forward,” Wyness told Football Insider.
However, we might not be done yet.
There might be certain issues that the club wants to address and refight with the Premier League because we have another case that could result in a second punishment.
That appears to be the sole method of avoiding a second penalty.
“To acknowledge that they’ve made two very significant mistakes on important matters is not good for the Premier League.”
As I’ve mentioned multiple times, I’m not impressed with how long this process is taking.
I’m not sure how positive this conclusion is until we have more information about the specifics of the appeal.
