Everton: Outrageous message issued after appeal news from Premier League.
Oliver Holt believes that the Premier League’s original decision to sanction Everton with a 10-point deduction was “incredibly harsh” but believes the current update is a step in the right direction.
An independent panel’s ruling on the deduction seems to agree with Holt, having cut the Toffees’ 10-point deduction to six points, although it may have a favorable impact on the extravagant spending of others.
The decision has seen Everton jump up the Premier League standings, going from 17th, one point above Luton Town in the relegation zone, to 15th, above Brentford and Nottingham Forest.
Writing for Daily Mail on Tuesday [27 February, page 63], Holt said: “The original deduction imposed on Everton for breaking spending rules was ridiculously harsh.
“It had a distinct feel of a punishment designed pour encourager les autres. It may have had a positive effect in restraining the exorbitant spending of others thereafter but that does not mean it was not horribly unfair.
“The four-point reduction in the ban, decided by the Premier League’s appeals board and announced yesterday, is a welcome step in the right direction and a credit to the reasoned arguments Everton have produced in their defence.”
