Three Positions the 49ers Must Target in the 2024 NFL Combine

At the NFL scouting combine in 2024, the 49ers need to devote a significant portion of their attention on these three position groups.

The San Francisco 49ers will take their first move toward self-improvement this week at the Indianapolis 2024 NFL scouting combine.

The 49ers will own a first-round pick for the first time since 2021. They must find it unusual that they can genuinely play about with some of the more elite prospects. The 49ers need to concentrate and target these three places above all others. The trenches are where it starts and finishes.

Guard in attack mode

It’s usually possible to find good offensive linemen on days two or even three of the NFL draft. If the 49ers don’t spend a significant amount of time at the combine scouting the guards, they won’t be able to accomplish that. It’s about time they at last identify some talented individuals in the hopes that they can start, especially at right guard. Since Mike Person announced his retirement following the 2019 season, the 49ers have been forced to rotate at right guard.

Rather than using a platoon system at the position with Spencer Burford, they need to find someone they can stick with for the long haul. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeramiah has listed Zach Frazier of West Virginia, Jackson Powers-Johnson of Oregon, and Graham Barton of Duke. Maybe the 49ers can start this week there.

Offensive tackling

Unquestionably, right tackle Colton McKivitz was one of the 49ers’ worst starters in the previous season. The 49ers believed that McKivitz was their best option when Mike McGlinchey left in free agency last year. They now appear foolish because McKivitz was never able to string together a series of strong performances.

The 49ers are unable to cobble together an offensive tackle in free agency.

It’s one where they have to make sure they have a long-term solution, and they should deal with it in the draft. When Trent Williams decides to hang up his cleats in a year or two, they might even take him as their left tackle of the future. The 49ers may start players like Blake Fisher of Notre Dame, Tyler Guyton of Oklahoma, and Jordan Morgan of Arizona this week.

On the defensive end

Since Dee Ford joined the 49ers in 2019, they haven’t had a reliable defensive end to complement Nick Bosa. They have struggled to discover it every year. It’s quite obvious now that Drake Jackson will never make it there, even though he was meant to be the guy there. In order to eventually locate someone suitable, the 49ers will need to roll up their sleeves and start scouting pass rushers at the scouting combine this week.

The 49ers will be putting on some major defensive pressure if they can find the “Robin” to Bosa’s “Batman”. As it stands, they are already a formidable force. Adding another powerful edge rusher will only make them more deadly. This week, the 49ers may start players like Chris Baswell of Alabama, Adisa Isaac of Penn State, and Bralen Trice of Washington.
