Scottish Premiership fan views: ‘Rangers’ statement of intent; Celtic’s pivotal comeback’

It was another crucial weekend in the Scottish Premiership, with plenty of points in between.

Rangers’ new leaders emphasized their title credentials by defeating third-placed Heart of Midlothian, Celtic demonstrated that they will not give up the trophy easy with a comeback win away to Motherwell, and Ross County widened the gap at the bottom by edging Livingston.

Here is a collection of remarks from the respective fans:

Old Firm goes head to head.

Rangers were supposed to face a stiff challenge from in-form Hearts, but the fans left Ibrox with a spring in their step after an impressive 5-0 victory that they thought would put pressure on their city rivals the next day.

Matthew: Five-star performance! Blew away a lackluster Hearts team that had just made good progress. Whoever starts and comes on has a job to do, and they are playing for their own survival.

Stewart: This is the actual Rangers team. They made hearts appear like mugs, but they’re not. Injuries and team rotation aren’t harming them. They appear to be extremely strong in every field.

Dougie: Oh, jeez! I honestly expected a tight 2-1 victory for Rangers as Hearts were playing brilliantly.

Dougie: Oh, jeez! Rangers were expected to win by a narrow 2-1 margin because Hearts were playing well leading up to the game. But the Rangers broke the doors open and never let go of their control. They performed admirably as a team. Jack Butland could have gotten out his deck chair. Tom Lawrence and John Lundstram were the engine that kept everything running smoothly.

Darran: The Rangers board got it right by hiring Mr Clement. The difference in the team from two months ago is clear to witness, and I would confidently back us to beat anyone. There is so much belief and trust in this team right now, and I don’t see anyone domestically stopping us.

Gary: A stunning performance and a genuine statement of intent. Philippe Clement has developed an excellent atmosphere and mentality at Ibrox. I’m feeling extremely good for the first time in a long time. We know Brendan Rodgers can bottle it. Celtic are not accustomed to this level of strain. Let us accomplish this!

Elaine: Wow. Just wow. Even our most hopeful admirers didn’t see this coming. Fantastic performance that sends a powerful message to everyone else.

Russell: Simply fantastic! Rangers looked great from beginning to end. Tom Lawrence exhibited quality, Cyriel Dessers shown commitment, and Ridvan Yilmaz simply looked great. The January signings demonstrated their quality. Things are looking nice.

Motherwell surprised Celtic by grabbing the lead at Fir Park, but Brendan Rodgers’ side rallied after the break and finished the weekend two points behind Rangers courtesy to two stoppage-time goals. A display that has divided their fan base.

Jason: Big three points, and Adam Idah – what an outstanding sub effort. Hopefully, this will kick-start our season in preparation for a major title challenge.

John: Two halves, night and day. Celtic showed a significant improvement in the second half, with Adam Idah and Yang Hyun-jun making the difference. Cameron Carter-Vickers’ appearance provides everyone else a great confidence boost. Anyone who believes we will simply roll over and deliver the league to the Rangers should reconsider.

Anyone thinking we will just roll over and hand the league to Rangers need to think again. Glasgow derbies will decide where the league title goes this season. Bring it on.

Danny: A win is a win. But we cannot keep just playing half a game, at best. The game at Ibrox in early April is pivotal for the title and the manager I believe.

Grant: Two late goals and a 45-minute performance doesn’t rescue the season. Only a double will do. Defence is nothing without Cameron Carter-Vickers. He has to stay fit for the rest of the season or we’re done for.

Peter: I’ll take the three points. We need to get Liel Abada back on the team. There is little or no threat up front. Kyogo Furuhashi and Nicolas Kuhn contribute relatively little. We have no idea what happened to Kyogo. We desperately need him to get back to his amazing best. He and Abada are the only players capable of wreaking devastation on the opposing team.

Paul: Returning players, a strong second half, and demonstrating team spirit – these are the types of games that lead to titles. Rangers should not be overconfident. It makes little difference if Celtic wins poorly. We still believe we will win the league again, but the board must support the manager’s efforts to make quality signings in the upcoming transfer window.

Patrick: Ange Postecoglou’s mantra was “we never stop,” but now we’re keeping the ball in the corner to prevent losing in the final minutes, and Brendan Rodgers says “the system hasn’t changed one iota.” Either the players are not delivering, or his message is unclear. But I believe winning is all that matters anymore.

Robin: Kyogo Furuhashi is no longer the goal-scoring machine he once was. Important three points, however huffing and puffing does not always result in a blowout.

Tom: The squad needs to understand that it’s a 90-minute game, not 45. Got away with one, but I was pleased with the second half effort. Yang Hyun-jun is more confidence, Daizen Maeda was missing chances galore, Adam Idah is looking like a nice.
