Rangers chiefs are terrified that “special” talent will depart this summer.
Those high up at Rangers are anxious that a “special” Ibrox player could look for a move away from the club in the summer transfer window, according to writer Dean Jones.
The Gers are still prospering in the Scottish Premiership this season, with Saturday’s 5-0 hammering of Hearts ensuring they remain two points clear at the top of the league.
Regardless matter what occurs between now and the conclusion of the season, though, fresh additions have to come in during the summer transfer window, allowing Philippe Clement to take his squad to the next level with players specific to his needs and system.
Oscar Cortes arrived on loan from Lens back in January, but new rumors have indicated that Rangers seek to make his move a permanent one in the summer, if he goes well in the coming months.
Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie is also seen as an option to come in and make the Gers’ assault more formidable, and the attacker will be available on a free transfer when his contract at Bramall Lane runs out at the conclusion of the year.
It is also crucial that Clement manages to keep hold of important present players, though, and a key update has now been offered over one influential Ibrox hero.
Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones revealed that Rangers executives are anxious that Todd Cantwell could depart this summer, even though he looks to be happy at the club today.
“I think Cantwell, he seems to be anyway, relishing life at Rangers. I would be astonished if he departed the club in the summer. But clearly, one of Rangers’ main anxieties will be that Premier League clubs are looking at his situation and decide to throw some huge money on the table. It’s absolutely not out of the question, given how good he’s been playing at times.”
The prospect of Rangers losing Cantwell this summer is a troubling one, considering the excellent influence he has made since signing on a permanent transfer from Norwich City last year.
The 25-year-old has brought techincal brilliance in midfield, with an ability to keep the ball in tight situations, but he is also a hard-working presence, giving his all for the cause. A tally of five goals and three assists in the middle of the park is a strong performance in the Championship in 2023/24, and his previous youth team coach Gary Cockaday has recognized him as a “special” potential in the past.
As Jones relates to, Cantwell does look to be happy at Rangers, so a transfer away would certainly come as a shock, but there is reason to be concerned about his head being turned by a move back to England.
