According to Jack Butland, Philippe Clement isn’t truly the “big bad wolf” that the public perceives him to be.
The Rangers boss has garnered plaudits for the aura he has cultivated since taking over in October and is known for being direct in his interactions with the media. He also doesn’t take no for an answer; he consistently brushes off inquiries concerning the title race and closes any discussions that stray too far into the future.
However, the first-choice goalie for him claims that things are not always as they seem. Butland claims that the Belgian is far less intimidating to his players and, instead of attempting to be a feared figure, only uses his tactical acumen to improve them.
“He may be the big, bad wolf in the media, but he gives us a great sense of confidence.”
From a tactical standpoint, there are some things he has been gradually instilling in us about how he wants us to play.
“It’s all about being effective, creating opportunities, moving the ball forward with efficiency, and being very hard to stop.”
Butland he acknowledges that under former manager Michael Beale, the Light Blues were nearing a “dead-end”. After losing to Aberdeen at home and falling seven points behind in the title race, the Englishman was sent off.
The England national team member continued, “We were scrambling as a group.” It was not a nice moment for us. It wasn’t right, and it wasn’t going to plan.
We were heading into a dead end as we went down a cul-de-sac. We didn’t feel like we were making progress toward our goals.
