There is hope that Dre Greenlaw will be available for the 49ers by Week 1 of the 2024 regular season, even if it is still too early to make a firm decision.
With a torn Achilles, the San Francisco 49ers linebacker had surgery last week and is expected to miss most of the season. But thanks to recent technical advancements, Greenlaw might very well recover in six months instead of the usual nine to twelve months.
According to Dr. Kenneth Jung, a foot and ankle surgeon and consultant for the Los Angeles Rams, “we can confidently tell patients that at six months, that’s a reasonable amount of time to be back,” Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle reported. Naturally, nothing is absolute. How well he recovers and regains his strength will determine a lot of things.
Achylosing tendonitis was a problem for Dre Greenlaw going into the 2024 postseason. Two weeks later, he was back in the starting lineup after missing Week 18. However, there was a far higher chance of harm even if the problem might have felt fine enough to continue. While degeneration of the ligament was mentioned by Jung as a potential cause of the whole tear, athletes do assume a risk while competing in major sports.
“You know there’s a potential risk that something can let go or tear if you’re playing through pain and you have pain in that area,” stated Jung. “They undoubtedly had those discussions. However, since the Super Bowl and the playoffs are undoubtedly career-defining occasions, players will undoubtedly be more prepared to take chances.
Practicing at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, Jung assisted running back Cam Akers in 2021 with his achilles tendon rehabilitation. One of the quickest recoveries from the injuries that once took a year was achieved by the offensive player, who was able to fully recover in six months.
However, as the surgeon notes, feeling secure in the repaired tendon is the real measure of being prepared for football; recuperation time is just one element.
Jung continued, “It’s regaining that confidence, especially with an Achilles.” “They recall that pop in their leg in the back of their minds. And it’s learning to push off and burst off that leg with confidence once more. It is necessary for them to let go of that fear so they may simply put their foot down and go forward.
Greenlaw had surgery in the middle of February, thus training camp and mid-august are exactly halfway through the six-month schedule. The 49ers hope for an earlier than later comeback for the upcoming season, but they won’t push their rising star back onto the field.
In 2023, 26-year-old Dre Greenlaw recorded a total of 120 tackles. Throughout the season, he also recorded 1.5 sacks, four quarterback hits, and four pass break-ups. He’s about to start the last year of a $16.4 million two-year contract.
