On Friday, the Las Vegas Raiders unveiled their formal coaching staff for the 2024 campaign, and Mike Caldwell, the former defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars, was included. Caldwell will take on the roles of linebackers coach and defensive run-game coordinator for the Raiders. For the last two seasons, he most recently worked as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive coordinator. With 20.6 points allowed per game, his defense squad placed 12th in the league in his debut season as defensive coordinator (2022). Prior to joining Jacksonville, Caldwell coached inside linebackers for three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team he helped win a Super Bowl.
That came after Caldwell spent four seasons with the New York Jets as an assistant head coach and inside linebacker. He was the Arizona Cardinals’ inside linebackers coach for two seasons before joining their staff.
In 2008, Caldwell started his NFL coaching career as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, working under current Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Before taking on the roles of assistant linebackers coach in 2010 and linebackers coach in 2011 and 2012, he worked for the first two seasons as a defensive quality control coach. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Caldwell spent 11 seasons (1993–94 to 2003–04) as an NFL linebacker, starting 49 games out of 159 total. In the third round of the 1993 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Cleveland Browns. Caldwell spent three seasons with the Cleveland Browns before playing for the Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Cardinals, and Eagles.
The Raiders have a significant advantage because of Caldwell’s years of experience coaching NFL linebackers, especially with their developing linebacker corps. Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo, two linebackers for the Raiders, are coming off of successful seasons, and Caldwell’s experience should only help the team advance toward becoming one of the best in the league. The NFL Scouting Combine will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, from February 27 to March 4, 2024. The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25–27, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan. The No. 13 overall pick is presently in the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders.
