New Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has opened up on a life-threatening injury he suffered during his playing career
Oliver Glasner has disclosed how his personal health concerns helped him to fully see Roy Hodgson’s predicament. The former manager of Crystal Palace became unwell after a training session last Thursday and was subsequently admitted to the hospital.
It was revealed four days later that the former Eintracht Frankfurt manager will succeed him. The 76-year-old was forced to leave Selhurst Park after his sickness, even though his contract there expired at the conclusion of the season.
“Given recent circumstances, it may be prudent at this time for the club to plan ahead,” Hodgson stated in a statement.
Reminiscent of his own health concern in 2011, shortly before turning 37, Glasner underwent emergency surgery to remove a subdural haematoma. The Austrian added at his press conference, “When somebody tells you that (50/50) afterwards, of course you ponder, and this is why I spoke about Roy, for example. Doctors told him he had a “50/50” chance of surviving.
“This really comes from the bottom of my heart because sometimes we forget that health is our biggest value, because when you are healthy, you don’t think about it.” He acknowledged that even he occasionally forgets this crucial lesson, particularly while engrossed in football.
“It’s just football, but it’s really important. Perhaps the greatest thing on earth, but since health is involved, it is not the most crucial thing.”
The event happened during Rapid Vienna’s match against the Austrian Bundesliga. Ried’s defensive mainstay Glasner was involved in a head-on collision that needed stitches. He appeared to have suffered a concussion following the game, and shortly after that, when they were traveling to Copenhagen for a Europa League encounter, his symptoms got worse.
“I said absurd things. “My roommate informed the doctor that Oliver was having problems,” he continued.
