Rangers: Chris Sutton destroys Celtic chief Peter Lawwell in new Ibrox title admission

Celtic manager Peter Lawwell may be “handing Rangers the title” if the current upheaval at Parkhead continues for the foreseeable future, according to Chris Sutton.

Philippe Clement’s side presently leads the Scottish Premiership table, two points ahead of Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops after 26 games, following an emphatic 3-0 victory over St Johnstone last time out.

While Sutton has underlined that there is still enough to play for between now and the conclusion of the season, he has chastised Celtic for the current instability at Parkhead, implying that the Gers may not have the upper hand in the title battle.

On Saturday (24 February), he wrote in the Daily Record: “I did note Lawwell saying that there remains a long way to go, all to play for, and it is about uniting behind the team for these purposes.” That I completely agree with for their benefit. They must put a line under the turmoil and discontent.

“If it goes on, they might as well gift the Rangers the title right now. Rodgers has been the hunted throughout his two spells at Celtic. Now he will be the hunter.

“Celtic cannot afford to make any more mistakes at this point in the season. Rangers aren’t perfect, but Philippe Clement is getting a tune out of them.

“I keep hearing that Celtic still have an advantage because they have players who have already completed the course, but the problem is that there are now guys in the squad who have not.

“It’s not lost. Far from it. However, it will require a concerted effort, and it is past time to put an end to what has come before. That can be done in May; supply the correct and definitive title answer.”

Can Rangers defeat Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title?

The atmosphere at Ibrox is far better than it was at Celtic Park, with Clement’s side exuding confidence and excitement that had not been felt in the blue half of Glasgow in years.

Sutton argued that while the Gers have not been faultless, they have consistently won matches, shedding the stigma of being serial losers that has plagued them in recent years.

However, nothing has been won in the Premier League yet, and plenty can change between now and May. Rangers have not been awarded a title, and they must continue to win to maintain the pressure on Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops until the end of the season.

The title competition is anticipated to be a close contest, and the Gers must maintain their momentum to upset the status quo this season.
